Mossie Trap

I came across this idea recently and thought I’d give it a go as the mosquitoes have been particularly bad lately, due to the late wet spring weather we have had.

Homemade Mosquito Trap

You will need:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
1 – 2 litre bottle

What to do:
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix the brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold pour into the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. You don’t have to mix it. It creates carbon dioxide which attracts the mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part of the bottle upside down into the other half, taping them together.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are supposedly drawn to the colour black.)

For continuous control change the solution every 2 weeks. I’ll let you know how my Mossie Trap goes! Fingers crossed!

Infused water

Do you get tired of the taste of water? Find it difficult to drink the daily recommended requirement?

Try these infused waters.

These naturally flavoured waters use fruits and vegetables to help with hydration and detoxification in the body. Add as much fruit/veg in the water as you like and let the water sit for at least 30 minutes before drinking. Here’s a few ideas to get you started.

  1. Green tea, mint, and lime - This helps fat burning, digestion, headaches, congestion and is a great breath freshener.
  2. Strawberry and kiwi fruit – This can assist our cardiovascular health, immune system protection, blood sugar regulation, and digestion.
  3. Cucumber, lime, and lemon- A great water for those needing help with weight management, bloating, appetite control, hydration, and digestion.
  4. Lemon, lime, and orange – This water assists digestion, adds vitamin C, boosts the immune system, and helps with heartburn. (Drink at room temperature)
  5. Apple and cinnamon sticks – This drink helps boost metabolism and hydration.

Experiment with whatever fruit and veg combinations you have on hand. Add ice to keep cool and keep refrigerated.

I am currently drinking watermelon infused water made with frozen watermelon cubes and a few mint leaves!

Watermelon has amazing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant health benefits which is also great for bloating and muscle repair. Simply blend fresh raw watermelon in a blender until smooth (it will resemble water). Pour the blended watermelon into your favourite ice-cube trays and have fun with the shapes/trays! Store in snap lock plastic bags in the freezer. Other fruits can also be frozen whole in ice cubes and added to your water – plain or sparkling, added to smoothies and even your favourite cocktail! A great way to use up any excess fruit and veg!
